Geocache Description:

The Soldiers of the Avenue is a beautiful living memorial that remembers the fallen of World War I from the Hobart area and surrounds. The original planting of trees took place in August 1918 with a crowd of nearly 10,000 attending (a third of the population of Hobart at the time). Further plantings in 1919 and 1926 saw a total of 534 trees planted. Prior to 2002, the impacts of development, drought and fire saw the avenue survive but in a somewhat diminished state. The formation of the Friends of Soldiers Memorial Avenue in 2001-02 gave new rise to the avenue’s life when the Friends successfully lobbied the council to help restore the Avenue back to what it was always intended to be. For families, the trees were the graves they couldn’t visit and for the wider community, a place of commemoration and remembrance. It is definitely worth a visit. Please bring your own pen. At GZ please take a moment to pause, remember and take in the view across the memorial trees on all levels and to take in the river view as well.
