Geocache Description:

Number 32 in a series of caches to celebrate all those local pubs that we have lost over time either to being converted for other uses such as housing or restaurants, or have been demolished and something else built on the site.

Rayners pub in 2006, the year it closed

Rayners was built in 1937 for Truman's Brewery, and was originally called the Rayners Hotel. This pub/hotel combination was typical for the general area, with the Pinner Arms a also built around the same time (which was originally known as the Whittington Hotel, although now only operates as a pub). Rayners was designed by the architect firm Eedle and Meyers, who created a number of the Truman's Brewery pubs built in this period, as well as those for other breweries.

The pub closed down in 2006, outlasting the Brewery which had closed in 1989. It was Grade II listed that same year, presumably to save it from demolition. It is one of three Eedle and Meyers pubs to be Grade II listed, alongside the Red Lion in Islington, and the Angel, also in Islington. At the time of listing, Rayners was described as being a virtually unaltered example of a 1930s pub interior.

Despite the conversion into a religious college, due to the Grade II listing, Rayners is still obviously a former pub albeit with some different signage. That isn't to say that all the signage has been removed - the pub sign is still standing (and the cache is not on the pub sign) along with the Truman's Brewery terracotta panel on the front of the building.

If you would like to expand this series the pub in question must meet this criteria: The pub must be closed and no longer able to operate as a pub again. Eg. The pub has been knocked down, turned into flats or a supermarket, etc.

The pub does not qualify if it is just closed or boarded up as it can still be used for its purpose and therefore not "lost" just unavailable at present.

If the location meets this criteria please contact The Cooke Family through the messaging centre here https://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=e6925df2-b8d1-4661-adb9-1488a3cb414d so that they can issue your lost pub its unique number and add it to the database.
