Awakenings was a 1990 movie starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams, and a scene from it was shot in these waters of Edgewater Park, where I grew up as a child. I spent 13 years living inside this private community, until we moved out to just a few blocks away in the late 70's.
This was not a park when I lived here. It is quite lovely now. We used to call this area the "Sand Dunes". It was a marshy and overgrown area where you only went through to get to the main roads using short cuts, and others came here to do things they didn't want their parents to see. I'm thinking the revenue obtained from allowing the movie to be filmed here helped create this park, but I have no idea. I never asked.
