Vellano è il capoluogo della Valleriana/Svizzera Pesciatina ed è chiamato il paese degli scalpellini.
Sorge su un poggio in cima al quale anticamente sorgeva la rocca.
La forma urbana classicamente medievale suggerisce la disposizione alla difesa. Ecco perché troverai numerose case-torri.
Le vie del paese sono chiamate rughe e sono molto strette perché in caso di bisogno era più agevole la difesa.
Nonostante la parziale rovina delle fortificazioni medievali, il borgo conserva ancora l'aspetto di molti secoli fa.
La chiesa castellana di San Michele, nella ruga San Michele, ha al suo interno un’acquasantiera trecentesca in marmo e pietra serena. Anticamente la chiesa serviva anche da luogo di raccolta degli oggetti smarriti.

La cache si trova in prossimità della Miniera di Publio (Museo Etnografico del minatore e del cavatore), dove sono esposti oltre 10.000 campioni di archeologia cavatoria e molto materiale attinente le cave, gli scalpellini e la pietra serena della Valleriana. Il Museo visitabile dal Lunedì al Sabato dalle 10,00 alle 13,00 e dalle 15,00 alle 17,00. Entrata libera.

Vellano is the administrative centre of Valleriana/Svizzera Pesciatina. It is called the stonemasons village.
It is placed on the top of a hill on which once a fortress was located.
The classical medieval urban shape suggests it was a defense hamlet. That’s why you will see many tower-houses.
The streets are called rughe (wrinkles) and they are very narrow because in case of need the defense was easier.
Despite the partial ruin of the medieval fortifications, the village appears as it was many centuries ago.
San Michele church is located in ruga San Michele and it contains a 14th century holy water font in marble and pietra serena. In ancient times in this church lost items were collected.

The cache is near Miniera di Publio (Ethnographic Museum of the miner) open from Monday to Saturday from 10,00 to 13,00 and from 15,00 to 17,00. Free entrance. This museum is about quarries, stonemasons and serena stone. It also keeps more than 10.000 samples of mining archaeology.
