Geocache Description:

The first of a new series of caches which are intended to get as close as possible to a proper Dartmoor letterbox.  Most who visit Dartmoor will be familiar with the history of letterboxing, starting with the placing of calling cards in a bottle at Cranmere Pool in 1854.  It very slowly developed until it really took off and became very popular towards the end of the last century, but has probably declined since.

A major difference, of course is that a letterboxer would only use map and compass to arrive at the starting point. Whereas you are allowed (and even encouraged) to use a GPS!

Please DO NOT remove the stamp or ink pad from this letterbox.

Longaford Tor - 162° M
Wall at summit of  hill - 68° M

This lettterbox is not situated in a military firing zone.

The weather on Dartmoor can change suddenly and unexpectedly and ALL types of weather conditions can be experienced. Please ensure that you have the correct clothing and map & compass (and know how to use them). Please do NOT rely solely on your GPS.

I would like to thank the Dartmoor National Park Authority for their kind permission to place this letterbox, which has been placed according to the geocaching guidelines.
