Being a private pilot, a geocacher, and one of the few members of the "MOGA Lifers" group (people who have attended EVERY MOGA event), I felt it was appropriate to blend all of those hobbies into a quick and easy cache just outside the airport.
The Captain Ben Smith Airfield at the Monroe City Airport is named in honor of Army Captain Ben Smith who came from the Monroe City area and flew Black Hawk helicopters. He was killed when his helicopter crashed near Tikrit, Iraq on 11/7/2003.
The cache is a simple green bison tube on the fence. There is NO NEED to go inside the fence--you may access the cache from OUTSIDE the fence. Permission to place this cache was given by the Airport Management.
I made a video of our flight to Monroe City. That video may be found at this link: https://youtu.be/Nlz9ASmKcIQ
