Historic Hamilton will be a series of caches that serve to bring cachers to historic places in and around the City of Hamilton. These caches can be placed by anyone, and are not limited to one CO. If you know of a historic place that you would like to bring people to, feel free to add it to the series!
Cache is a bison tube that has only a logbook. Please bring your own writing instrument to sign the logbook and replace as found. Parking can be found.
CARLUKE COMMUNITY CENTRE
'The Little Red Schoolhouse'
What is now the Carluke Community Centre once echoed with the voices of children laughing and reciting their multiplication tables.
In 1844, a log schoolhouse was built on this site. This log structure was replaced in 1858 by a larger red brick schoolhouse in the Gothic Revival style. Damaged by fire in 1925, the building was reconstructed, using its original walls and roughcut uneven stone base, to its present style.
Some of the features of the schoolhouse include its Gothic cupola or belfry and weathervane. This cupola houses a bell which used to summon local children to school. Round eight-paned window frames grace the front and rear walls. The east wall contains five joined four over four double hunt windows, which replaced the original Gothic arched windows.
Although the building ceased to be used as a school in 1969, it stands as a reminder of the determination of our early residents to build a better life for themselves and their children.
