Breaking free of the naturalism of Impressionism in the late 1880s, a group of young painters sought independent artistic styles for expressing emotions rather than simply optical impressions, concentrating on themes of deeper symbolism. Through the use of simplified colors and definitive forms, their art was characterized by a renewed aesthetic sense as well as abstract tendencies. These artists, often working independently, are today called "Post-Impressionists".
Paul Gauguin is one of the most significant French artists to be initially schooled in Impressionism, but who broke away to pioneer a new style of painting. As part of the new generation of artists responding to Impressionism, Paul Gauguin followed diverse stylistic paths in search of authentic intellectual and artistic achievements. He often looked toward remote destinations where he could live easily and paint the purity of the country and its inhabitants.
The painting illustrated in the image below is his famous "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?", a huge, brilliantly colored but enigmatic work painted in 1897.
