Geocache Description:

The Caves, Caverns and Sinkholes (CCS) geocaching series brings to your attention the various features of the limestone coast, and beyond. These karst are formed by erosion and dissolution of the limestone. Some of these features that contain water can be scuba dived with the appropriate qualifications.

Fossil Cave, formerly known as The Green Waterhole, is only a few metres from the Princes Highway (Route B1) between Mount Gambier and Millicent. It is notable both as a paleontological site and as a cave diving site. Fossil Cave is a small pond that leads to broad chamber with dark silt at the bottom. Small pool at other end leads to single small chamber.

Since the mid 1960s, a variety of Pleistocene subfossil material of birds and mammals has been found and recovered by divers from the surface of a rockpile to a depth of about 15 metres below the water surface. The probable accumulation mode was by animals drowning when they fell into the cave while attempting to use it as a source of drinking water. Dating of the subfossil remains indicated that their deposition occurred mainly between 15,000 and 40,000 years ago.

CEGSA Cave Reference: 5L81.

Warning: You do NOT need to enter the cave to obtain cache. This area can be dangerous. Caution is advised especially with children.
