Geocache Description:

Billinge Lump is the local name for the beacon. This was the site of one of the Armada Beacons used to send warnings of invasion the length of the country, but the building there was erected as a sea mark even though the sea is 15 miles away. The hill is now used for more modern communications in profusion!
The views from here are well worth the climb on a clear day, ranging from the sea north from Liverpool and along the Welsh coast, to the Lakeland fells, and in the other direction Manchester and the Pennines, and to the South the viaducts on the M6 and M60 (Thelwall and Barton) as well as the local towns, Wigan and St Helens.
There used to be a quarry on the hill but now filled in and piped for the extraction of methane prior to restoration.

Possibly the best approach is from Crank Road at N 53 30.707 W 2 43.209 and along the footpath between the houses to the lovely beech wood, Billinge Plantations, itself worth a walk even without the climax of the Beacon.
Alternative and my favourite approach would be from Beacon Road in Billinge and you could visit Cafe on the corner for a lovely ice cream.

Please take care when retrieveing and hiding the cache as muggles can see you from the hill.
The conatiner is magnetic and must go lid up in its special green camouflaged metal hide.

Thanks to John Stead for allowing me to adopt this cache.
