When we visited the traditional cache here, we noticed that this was a beautiful example of Tufa, easily accessible with enough chunks of broken tufa lying around the base of the rock outcrop that one can pick up a piece and handle it.
Tufa is a variety of limestone formed when carbonate minerals precipitate out of ambient temperature water. This tufa was formed near the edge of the glacial Searles Lake. This is the lake beside the community of Trona. Tufa is also formed at hot or cold springs.
This tufa exposure is particularly good. Your task is to do the following and let me know what the results are.
Is the tufa smooth or rough?
Does the tufa have very sharp edges?
What color is the tufa.
