Das Eichhörnchen aus Eichhorn
Als große Eichhörnchenfans war klar, dass es eines Tages einen eigenen Cache für diese herzigen, flauschigen Tiere von uns geben würde. Und was bietet sich hier besser an als eine Ortschaft, die komplett unbedost ist? Und noch dazu Eichhorn heißt?
Vielleicht trefft ihr ja hier auf das eine oder andere Eichhörnchen. Eines wird auf jeden Fall vor Ort sein. ;)
Kurze Eichhörnchen-Info
Bei uns in Mitteleuropa ist das Eurasische Eichhörnchen heimisch. Eichhörnchen, eine Gattung der Baumhörnchen, ernähren sich hauptsächlich von Samen und Früchten. Derzeit bekannt sind 28 Arten, von denen 3 über Europa und Asien verteilt sind. Mittlerweile gibt es in Europa auch schon das Grauhörnchen, welches bis zu seiner Einschleppung hier nicht natürlich vorgekommen ist. Dieses hat z.B. in Großbritannien das Eurasische Eichhörnchen schon größtenteils verdrängt.
Eichhörnchen sind hauptsächlich am Tag aktiv und suchen dann ihre Nahrung: Samen, Nüsse und Früchte – manchmal sogar Insekten und auch andere Kleintiere. Meistens findet man die ausgezeichneten Kletterer auf Bäumen, wo sie auch ihre Kobel bauen. Gefahr droht ihnen von Mardern und auch Raubvögeln.
Das bei uns heimische Eichhörnchen wiegt zwischen 20 und 40 dag. Der lange, behaarte Schwanz ist etwa genau so lang wie der Körper. Die Farbe kann variieren von hellrot bis braun, fast schwarz, der Bauch ist hell. Auch andere Farben kommen immer wieder vor – sehr helle oder auch „bunte“ Tiere. Vor allem im Winter kann man an den Ohren deutlich die langen Haare, die Ohrpinsel, erkennen.

We are big fans of squirrels so it was just a question of time until there will be a cache for this lovely fleecy fellows. What would be a better place than a village without a cache? Especially when the name of the village fits perfectly? (The translation of the village name would be “Squirrel”!)
Maybe you’ll meet some squirrels here. At least one will be on site. ;)
Short squirrel information
In Europe domestic is the Eurasian red squirrel. These squirrels are a species of tree squirrels who mainly feed on seeds and fruits. There are 28 known types of squirrels – only 3 of them are living in Europe and Asia. Meanwhile the grey squirrel has been introduced to Europe (mainly UK and Ireland) and replaced the red squirrels in some parts of these countries.
During the day the squirrels are searching for their food: seeds, nuts and fruits – sometimes they even eat insects and small animals. Usually you’ll find the perfect climbers on a tree where they build their dreys. Predators are birds of prey, martens, cats etc.
The weight of the domestic squirrel is about 200 to 400 grams. The tail is long and hairy and nearly as long as the whole body. The colour is mainly rusty red to dark brown or nearly black and the belly is light. There are even animals that are white or with different colours. Especially in winter they have very long hair on their ears.
