Soda Creek was an important cog in the cariboo gold rush of the 1860's. With the arrival of the cariboo wagon road in 1863 and the launch of the first sternwheeler steamboat in the upper Fraser River, the SS "Enterprise", Soda Creek became a bustling terminus for travelers seeking their fortunes in the goldfields. It was soon home to several saloons, gristmills, hotels, a sawmill, and blacksmith. Today little remains but you can still see the town site including the historic jail, where the very same man who built it was the first to spend a night there. The Soda Creek/Macalister Road runs parallel to Highway 97 and the Fraser River for 20 km, providing spectacular scenery along the entire way, before rejoining the highway making it a fantastic detour/geotour.
