Didi and I sat in the sun admiring the view after we finished my leftover pizza lunch. I said to Didi, “Peak 3 really deserves a lonely cache of its own, doesn’t it?”
Didi agreed, so here you go....
The cache is nothing special, just a micro container with a log; your reward will be the stunning views and the great sense of accomplishment from making the climb.
This is a hike that will take you somewhere spectacular— but it doesn’t take a long time. Starting at the Canyon Road trail head, my hike took just under three hours. That included navigating spring conditions (mud, ice, snow), many rest stops (to catch my breath), lunch (the leftover pizza), photo stops, and a cache hide.
There are a few different trail options. A lot of people take the switchback trail to the Flattop saddle, then hang a right- up and over Peak 2 and down the ridge to Peak 3. Alternatively you can take a right at the provided waypoint and head straight up the skier’s bowl. Either way you come, be cautious at the top as there are some steep sections. If you visit in snowy conditions, be wary of avalanche risk. Also, be prepared for changing weather and watch out for moose, bears, and sheep.
The hide is not very winter friendly, but many people use this area for skiing in the winter, click here to learn more: Peak 3 skiing article
