Geocache Description:

Online "found it" logs that do not have a corresponding name on the physical logbook will be deleted.

We placed this before the Ides of March when nature decided to flood this river valley with dangerous water which destroyed nearby highways, county roads & bridges. People were being evacuated from places normally miles from water.

At home, the Platte River had bust its dike & after flooding the SW side of town was starting to pour in 2 blocks from our house.  We were being warned that we were next to be innundated. We'd left that morning for a caching trip, & the last road out closed immediately behind us. We crossed the last open bridge to Omaha while our geocats were stranded at home with waters still rising.

Several tense days later we reached St Patrick's Day, when the luck of the Irish finally peaked the swell in the wee hours of the morning. The waters started to drop, & LA was able to catch a charter plane to reach our cats.

This particular area got hit hard by the flood.  We expected it to be completely washed away. It took about 2 weeks for the area to open enough to even get close.

As of March 31st, road 28 for both U blvd & Military Ave, & 29/58 from the south were still closed.  We parked at the waypoint provided, then hiked in past debris (possibly even pieces of a pontoon boat) & corn husks plastered to everything up to about 10 ft high.  We hiked past a section of road that is now a lake with a small 2.5 ft section to walk on that used to be the shoulder. No driving on flooded roads, getting feet wet or going past closed signs required!

In an amazing feat of how-in-the-heck-is-that-possible, this stubborn little cache actually survived with a dry logbook. Just north of here, hwy30 was washed out leaving a 40-50 foot dropoff where one never existed. Just south of here they had to bring in massive boulders, bigger than a human, during a 24/7 operation just to have something, anything, to reattach the replacement railroad to.

The terrain rating is for the current hike in.  Probably will be a while before these backroads are repaired.
