The Town of Pelham has turned an old railway property into a recreational trail for hikers, cyclists and Geocachers. The trail has been named the Gerry Berkhout Trail.
The Gerry Berkhout “rail trail” is 6.5 kilometres long. The trail will extend from Centennial Park in Fenwick to the town’s edge on Murdoch Street. It will be a gravel walkway predominantly for walking, cycling & Geocaching. There is lots of parking at the Centenial Park.
The rail line land was purchased for $1 after the Hamilton, Toronto, Buffalo Railway closed. Some of the sections that have to be cleared have large stone and were overgrown.
The Town of Pelham earned provincial recognition in 2014 for being a walkable community. The Walk Friendly Community bronze designation was awarded by Green Communities Canada.
