Geocache Description:

Temple Emanu-El was the first Jewish congregation in Birmingham and founded in 1882 with 10 families.  Land for this cemetery was purchased in 1883 and the original synagogue property was purchased in 1884 at the corner of 5th Av N. and 17th St.  This cemetery became full in 1950 with most burials since then being at Elmwood.

The nearest grave to the cache is the grave of Jack Bass, a Holocaust survivor. Their are currently 7 Holocaust survivors still alive in Birmingham. One is Riva Schuster Hirsch. She occasionally speaks at the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center and works at the Jewish Community Center. She shared her powerful story to AL.com on Nov 28, 2016. I hope you have time to look it up. She was 7 years old when her and her family were taken to the concentration camp. She witnessed several members of family being killed. She describes in her article how she was able to survive. I have been to the Dachau concentration camp out side of Munich and I do not see how anyone was able to survive.

I am not sure if the gates are locked at night but would not recommend coming here after dark anyhow.
