Geocache Description:

Smokey Bear 75th Anniversary GeoTour

Since 1944, Smokey Bear has taught millions of Americans about their role in preventing wildfires. 75 years later, Smokey is celebrating a milestone birthday. Honor him and this timeless message of wildfire prevention by finding all 75 caches in this GeoTour.

About This Specific Location

Placed with the permission of the VA Dept of Forestry.

You are at the Agusta Nursery property. The Virginia Department of Forestry has been growing seedlings for Virginia landowners for 100 years. We offer a variety of pine and spruce species, such as Eastern white pine and loblolly pine, as well as dozens of hardwood varieties used to establish timber stands, pulpwood crops, Christmas tree plantations, wildlife habitats, stream bank stabilization, urban forests, biodiversity and improvement of watersheds. Pine and hardwood seed is sown and seedlings are visually inspected, harvested, hand-graded, labeled and packaged for delivery. Many of our hardwood species are grown from acorns and seeds collected by volunteers and donated to our nurseries. Virginia-grown seed generally produces trees that will grow well in our state.

Virginia maintains two nurserys, one in South East VA which grows mostly Loblolly and Longleaf Pines and this site which grows mostly hardwood species along with some conifers.

This is 1 of 11 hidden caches in VA and 1 of 75 hidden on the entire Smokey Bear GeoTour which is located in the following 7 states, VA, MD, OH, DE. NJ, PA and WV.
