Geocache Description:

The 2019 Land Between the Lakes Heritage Geocache Challenge has concluded with all 100 Challenge Coins being given out by May 20th. Thank you to everyone who participated. We urge you to continue to explore our shared Heritage.

The Geogache is a 6.5” x 8” clear watertight plastic box. The cache is placed near the location of a seasonal spring, under some bark.

This geocache is part of a yearly Geocaching Challenge put on by The Heritage Program at the US Forest Service at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.

This was the location of a springhouse on land owned by Isaac and Hallie McQuithey.  The land on which it sat was acquired around 1960 by the Army Corps of Engineers in preparation for the creation of Lake Barkley. The springhouse was probably removed at that time.

A springhouse is a small building situated over or near a spring and used for cool storage and drinking water protection. Before electricity was harnessed to provide power for electric wells and refrigerators, the family's water supply and food refrigeration was located outside the dwelling in a springhouse. The springhouse protected the water supply and provided a place for cooling foods and milk by using the cold temperatures of the water springing up from underground.
