Amherst Island is known for many historic events that took place over many years. One thing is is very known for is the wildlife this island contains. All sorts of animales from your seen everyday, to some you may think you have to travel to see. An example are deer. The island is actually starting to get over populated with them.
Visitors though tend to come seek the birds. Amherst Island is known for is birds. Especially the Owls and the Eagles. Each year the snowy owls seem to return each winter to nest and refuge here. Usually around March April time they tend to leave and head north. One of my favourite birds of prey is the Bald Eagle. Locals once a year here take an eagle count around Christmas time. If you have never seen a Bald eagle in the wild, this is the place to see them. In Dec of 2018, the count for spotted eagles (in one day) was 35. One of the highest counts in many years.
The Bird Sanctuary was placed here many years ago, started by a local. Today, you will be here and notice a bird house on almost every other fence post. Closer south to the water you will see larger bird houses homing several types of birds. The swallows definitly take over this area, and finding this cache you will be surrounded by them flying around. As you travel the Island, you will see all types. On my drive just to bring this cache, I saw Canada Goose, Swans, Robins, Swallows, Red Tail Hawk, Grekles, Turkey Vultures, Ducks, Seaguls, Finches, Chickadees... You name it, the list goes on. It goes to show the importance of this Bird Sanctuary.
