Šilėnų poligone – Lietuvos karinės aviacijos likučiai ir mįslė istorikams„Lituanica II“ – tai lėktuvas, kuriuo lakūnas Feliksas Vaitkus 1935 metais rugsėjo 21-22 dienomis skrido per Atlantą iš Niujorko į Kauną. F.Vaitkus kartojo istorinį S.Dariaus ir S.Girėno skrydį ir jam tai pavyko. Bebaimis lakūnas dėl gedimų nukrito ir apsilamdė šonus Airijoje. Netrukus lėktuvas buvo suremontuotas ir perduotas Lietuvos karinėms oro pajėgoms. Jį naudojo kaip mokomąjį lėktuvą. Lėktuvo gyvenimo pabaiga nebuvo tokia smagi. Kai šalyje įsigalėjo sovietų armija, dalis mūsų lėktuvų buvo sunaikinti kaip taikiniai Šilėnų poligone. Tarp jų ir „Lituanica II“. Ji poligone atsidūrė 1940-ųjų spalio pabaigoje.
Sovietams okupavus Lietuvą, Šiauliuose nusileido jų naikintuvai. Tik devyni „ANBO 41“ buvo nuskraidinti į Ukmergę ir jie tapo Sovietų tautinės eskadrilės dalimi. Kiti Šiauliuose buvę lietuvių lėktuvai sustumti į lėktuvų kapinyną.
„Lituanica II“ taikiniu tapo gana kryptingai – okupantai visada pirmiausia taikosi paniekinti ir sunaikinti tautinius simbolius.

Šilėnai Landfill - Lithuanian military aviation remains and riddle for historians
"Lituanica II" is an airplane on which the pilot Feliksas Vaitkus flew across the Atlantic from New York to New York on 21-22 September 1935. F.Vaitkus repeated the historical flight of S.Darius and S.Girėnas and he succeeded. Fearlessly, the pilot dropped out of the crash and plundered the sides in Ireland. Soon the aircraft was repaired and handed over to the Lithuanian Air Force. He used it as a training plane. The end of the airplane's life was not that hard. When the Soviet army became established in the country, some of our planes were destroyed as targets in the Šilėnai Landfill. Among them is Lituanica II.
