Geocache Description:

An easy 2.5km roundtrip hike, bike, ski or snowshoe (depending on the season) starting at Jim Smith Lake close to Cranbrook.

In the summer of 1926 fourteen elephants escaped into Cranbrook from their boxcars as they were being unloaded by circus handlers. Seven of these stampeding elephants were recaptured fairly quickly. The remaining seven had scattered far afield and it was to take another six weeks until all of these pachyderms could be accounted for. During these six weeks many locals were terrified by the huge beasts, trains had to be warned, some of the elephants were shot at, and one elephant died. The final elephant to be captured was Cranbrook Ed who was taken without too much of an incident at Jim Smith Lake.

Take time to look at the sandy-shored Jim Smith Lake. Maybe set up camp in the adjacent provincial park.

The trailhead begins alongside campsite #12. Take the right fork at .4km from the trailhead.

The cache contains 14 elephant keychains, each connected to a book detailing the full story of the escaped elephants, their exploits and their final capture. Also included is a scottie keychain and a pad and pencils.
