This cache has been archived.

KidVegas19: This FUN cache was problematic from the beginning. The history of the horse and times are still fascinating though.

Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the 2019 FUN Geocoin Challenge. Everyone knows you need a passport to have FUN. Be sure to download and print your FUN Passport (and find other helpful resources) at FUN Geocoin Challenge and get started today!

We couldn't make this up, even if we wanted to! The year was 1889. The year Washington became a state. Coincidence that the horse to win the Kentucky Derby that year was named Spokane? We don't think so, even though the horse was trained in Billings, Montana.

Once word got out (by whatever method word got out in 1889) that the horse called Spokane was the favorite to win, the entire town (wasn't a city yet) of Spokane made arrangements to travel to and witness that Kentucky Derby. It was like the Oregon Trail in reverse. Only 80% of the Spokane populace made it to the event. The other 20% died of dysentery on the trip. Our horse won and the Spokane citizens returned. Unfortunately 20% of them died of dysentery on the way back. That is why to this day Seattle is bigger than Spokane. True story...

At the posted coordinates you will find a sign describing the historic nature of this area. You will need info off this sign to complete this quick and E Z multi. The container is not hanging in a tree.

Because this is FUN we are going to solve for the W 117 25.xxx coordinates first.

Take the year the FUN Geocoin Challenge launched (hint: 2019) and subtract the year Corbin Park was established. Add to that result the the number you get by subtracting the year Corbin Park was established from the year the original park plan was enhanced by the Olmsted brothers. To that result add the number of homes built before 1927. Finally, add to that result the average number of laps health nuts jog around this park. (Hint: It's 5)

Now to solve for the N 47 41.xxx coordinates.

Calculate the number of years the district was the Washington-Idaho Fairgrounds and Racetrack. Remember that number. Because not every historic date for Corbin Park is on this sign, you will need to go to waypoint 2 (hint: you can see it directly to the west of this sign, a brown wooden structure just off the street) where you will find another date on the north side of that structure. Take the last two numbers from that date and subtract the number you are supposed to remember. Subtract from that result the number of hot dogs snatched from picnic plates by the family pooch while their owner wasn't looking in the month of July. (Hint: It's 8. Yes we have those records)

The final is in the Corbin Park Historic District.

This cache is part of the 2019 Fantastic Unbelievable Nonsense Geocoin Challenge where everything is made up and the points don't matter. If it's been FUN, it probably happened in Spokane, like the time Mr. Ed got totally drunk at the Brown Derby up the street. Oh the jokes that horse could tell! With your successful completion of the FUN Geocoin Challenge you will be rewarded with a trackable Geocoin, and we aren't horsing around!

  • All caches begin with the series name FUN: followed by a snazzy name so they are easy to search. We also made a FUN Bookmark of the caches.
  • To qualify for a Geocoin, find the code word or stamp in each geocache and record it on your passport.
  • Visit FUN Geocoin Challenge to find the challenge rules, a printable FUN Passport, and a map view of qualifying caches. Oh, and if you see Scareway (or you ARE Scareway) during your travels for this challenge, please remember to add 5,000 points to your personal total.

The Fantastic Unbelievable Nonsense Geocoin Challenge is sponsored by Cache Advance, Compass Creek Designs and by donations of money, time, and talent from local cachers. We hope you enjoy!
