Geocache Description:

No Joke! This phenomenal woman was born on 1 April!

Wangari Muta Maathai was born in rural Kenya on 1 April 1940.  She was educated at a Catholic mission school, finished first in her class and won a scholarship to study in the United States.  She majored in Biology, with minors in Chemistry and German.  She continued to obtain a Masters degree in Biology and later a PhD in Veterinary Anatomy.  Conservation and Biology were however always close to her heart and in the 1970s, Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental non-governmental organization focused on the planting of trees, environmental conservation, and women's rights. In 1986, she was awarded the Right Livelihood Award, and in 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for "her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace". Maathai died of complications from ovarian cancer on 25 September 2011.
