The Seekoei River Estuary is situated between Aston Bay and Paradise beach, in the Eastern Cape. It is a highly compromised ecosystem, with an Estuarine Health index of below 50 / 100. It is small Temporarily Open/Closed Estuary (TOCE), now being more closed than open. This is because of highly reduced flow from the catchment area down to the mouth. This is brought about by several small dams up stream and has been exacerbated by the recent drought. The estuary has also become very salty because of this. Because of this a lot of the plant and animal life in the estuary has started to die off. The causeway across the estuary further reduces the mixing of estuary mouth water, creating two distinct ecosystems on either side of it. The causeway does however serve a very important socio-economic purpose in the area.
A management plan has been put in place for this estuary and can be viewed on line.
