I was born and raised in Steeleville, but have since moved away. This cache is placed at a special place from my childhood, where I spent plenty of time enjoying nature. As you approach the GPS coordinates, the ground zero area should be very apparent. This historic site has become virtually unknown to most town residents.
You are looking for a structure that is apart of Lusk’s Ferry Road, a structure built either before or nearly after the U.S. was founded in the late 1700’s. Lusk’s Ferry Road, at least in Steeleville, partially mirrored Sparta Street, and connected Fort Kaskaskia with Lusk’s Ferry on the Ohio River.
Please do not park on Sparta Street to reach this cache. More importantly, please DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PARK AT THE HIGH SCHOOL/LIBRARY FOR SECURITY PURPOSES. The best place to park is at the end of South Ridge Avenue near the woods. In addition, there is ample free street parking in the streets around Ridge Avenue. There were at one time very easy trails to the ground zero location, but these have overgrown so you should be prepared for a 1/8 to 1/4 mile hike through flat, but somewhat overgrown, terrain. Be aware, the cache is on or near a local water source, so seasonal flooding may occur. The cache is placed so floodwater will not affect the cache.
Terrain rating is based on the hike to site. Once ground zero area is apparent, you are looking for a micro that is camouflaged to the exact environment in which the cache is placed. This is intentionally a difficult cache, I hope. Once you locate the ground zero site, the cache should probably take a little time and effort, and perhaps even some basic climbing skills, to discover. This may be a difficult cache to locate for small children.
Please note, as we all know, GPS can be slightly off, especially under the cover of the woods. The GPS coordinates are correct, but the Map appears to show this cache just on the South side of the creek. This cache is at the correct coordinates but just on the NORTH side of the creek. There is no reason whatsoever to be on the south side of the creek to find this cache. Placed on Easter 2019.
