Marcelin was named after its first postmaster, Antoine Marcelin, in 1904.
The village was originally located a half-mile east of its current location, but
moved in around 1913 to be closer to the new CN rail line.
Marcelin is home to St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, the largest church in the region.
The village serves as business and services centre for the local area
Marcelin is the administrative headquarters of the Muskeg Lake Cree First Nations band government.
During World War II, the Muskeg Lake reserve had the highest rates of Indigenous enlistment in Canada.
