Rugby  (pron. /ˈrɛɡbi/ o /ˈraɡbi; in inglese rugby football; in italiano pallovale o palla ovale) è il nome generico con cui vengono indicati alcuni sport di squadra. Ne esistono due varianti principali, differenziatesi nel Regno Unito alla fine del XIX secolo: il rugby a 15 o rugby union, disputato tra due squadre di 15 giocatori ciascuno, e il rugby a 13 o rugby league, con 13 elementi per squadra. Al di là delle differenze del numero dei giocatori, le due discipline hanno regole differenti e sono considerate indipendenti l'una dall'altra. Una meta si realizza depositando con una mano o le mani il pallone nell'area di meta avversaria direttamente. Il calcio di punizione come quello di conversione viene definito piazzato in quanto il pallone è fermo sul campo invece il calcio di rimbalzo avviene durante un'azione di gioco dopo aver fatto rimbalzare il pallone sul campo.
