W ovvero “Veronesi e Veronesità”, una serie di cache dedicata a personaggi, luoghi e tradizioni più o meno noti che si propone di farli conoscere o riscoprire attraverso un “Geo-itinerario” il quale, non so ancora bene dove mi/ci porterà, ma vuole essere una dichiarazione d’Amore per Verona, la mia città, il suo territorio e le persone che, ciascuno a proprio modo, l’hanno “celebrata” con la propria vita prima ancora che con le loro gesta, piccole o grandi che siano.
W6 – Marcantonio Bentegodi
“Carneade! Chi era costui?” …è questa l’esclamazione che Alessandro Manzoni fa ruminare nella bocca di Don Abbondio nei “Promessi Sposi”, ma chi era invece quest’altisonante Marcantonio Bentegodi al quale a Verona sono stati intitolati, già più di 150 anni fa, la prima e più famosa società sportiva veronese, successivamente l’Istituto Tecnico Agrario Statale con ben 5 sedi staccate in provincia e, prima nel 1910 e poi nel 1963, ben due stadi? Lo sport a Verona …ecco chi era! Questo è infatti, a ragione, il motto dell’omonima fondazione.
Marcantonio Bentegodi nacque il 25 Aprile 1818, in quella che, con la caduta del regime napoleonico e fino all’annessione al Regno d’Italia, ovvero dal 1814 al 1866, è stata la Verona austriaca e a raccontarci quel poco che si conosce della sua vita è Giorgio Arduini, nel secondo di tre volumi “Vite di grandi veronesi” - ed. 2005, dal quale apprendiamo che, frequentati gli studi classici, all’università si laureò in medicina e poiché era appassionato in particolare delle discipline di Ginnastica e Scherma, all’epoca molto praticate, fu instancabile promotore dell’associazionismo e della pratica sportiva; risalgono infatti almeno al 1862 le origini del sodalizio con la “Società dei Vecchi Schermitori Veronesi”.
Conclusasi la Terza Guerra d’Indipendenza Italiana ed in seguito alla Pace di Vienna del 3 Ottobre 1866, il successivo 16 Ottobre Verona venne annessa al Regno d’Italia con un plebiscito popolare e Bentegodi decise di entrare in politica, divenendo prima consigliere comunale e successivamente membro del Consiglio Provinciale di Sanità; poté così realizzare un sogno che cullava da tempo… coadiuvato da alcuni amici che condividevano i suoi stessi ideali sportivi e sociali, tra i quali ad esempio il poeta Aleardo Aleardi, l’ 1 Giugno 1869 venne istituita la polisportiva comunale “Società Veronese di Ginnastica e Scherma” che vide in Marcantonio Bentegodi un pioniere dello sport in Italia, il quale si rese protagonista di un’iniziativa, la prima ed ancora unica in Italia, oltre che, quasi certamente, anche a livello internazionale.
Nel 1873 Bentegodi ebbe un’altra lungimirante idea… stante i frequenti incendi che si verificavano in città, con grandi difficoltà di intervento a causa della scarsità di organico e di specifico addestramento, istituì una scuola provinciale di volontari pompieri presso la stessa società sportiva; lo scopo era quello di addestrare pompieri volontari che fossero in grado di fornire adeguato appoggio a quelli comunali e a tale scopo ogni comune della provincia era invitato a formare squadre di cinque componenti da inviare alla scuola che avrebbe provveduto, tramite la società sportiva, alla preparazione fisico/atletica degli stessi.
Purtroppo, il 9(Z) Agosto dello stesso anno Marcantonio Bentegodi si spense a Verona a soli 55 anni.
Con testamento redatto meno di due anni prima, Bentegodi affidò al Comune di Verona il proprio patrimonio costituito da terreni, fabbricati, titoli e denaro per un controvalore odierno di oltre € 3.000.000 con la precisa disposizione affinché la quarta parte fosse destinata “…per non dimenticare l’educazione fisica della gioventù veronese…”.
Da quei tempi diverse discipline sono entrate ed uscite dalle attività societarie, quali ad esempio calcio, tamburello, lotta, ciclismo, pugilato ed altre ancora, per arrivare alle attuali sezioni di atletica leggera, scherma, nuoto, pallanuoto, tuffi, ginnastica artistica, ginnastica ritmica, pesistica e tennis tavolo, con un palmares ricco di 150 medaglie, 40 delle quali d’oro, per un totale di 946 atleti tesserati nel 2019 e 58 atleti che nel corso della propria carriera sportiva hanno vestito i colori della nazionale italiana.
Con decorrenza 1 Gennaio 2007 la vecchia “Istituzione Comunale Marcantonio Bentegodi” ha assunto la forma giuridica e denominazione di “Fondazione Bentegodi”, con il Comune di Verona che, in quanto ente promotore e fondatore, ne mantiene indirettamente il controllo; nel 2018 sono state consegnate 51 borse di studio ad altrettanti giovani atleti meritevoli per risultati sportivi e scolastici.
La cache è nascosta nel luogo dove dal 1910 al 1963 sorse il primo “vecio” stadio intitolato a Marcantonio Bentegodi.

W or "Veronesi and Veronesità", a series of caches dedicated to characters, places and traditions more or less known that aims to make them known or rediscover through a "Geo-route" which, I still do not know where it will take me/us, but wants to be a declaration of Love for Verona, my city, its territory and the people who, each in their own way, have "celebrated" it with their own life even before their deeds, small or great that they are.
W6 – Marcantonio Bentegodi
"Carneade! Who was he?" ...this is the exclamation that Alessandro Manzoni makes to ruminate in the mouth of Don Abbondio in the "Promessi Sposi", but who was instead this high-sounding Marcantonio Bentegodi to whom in Verona were entitled, already more than 150 years ago, the first and most famous Veronese sports club, after the State Agricultural Technical Institute with 5 separate branches in the province and, first in 1910 and then in 1963, two stadiums? The Sport in Verona ...that's who he was! This is indeed the motto of the homonymous foundation.
Marcantonio Bentegodi was born 25th April 1818, in what, with the fall of the Napoleonic regime and up to the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, i.e. from 1814 to 1866, was the Austrian Verona and to tell us what little we know about his life is Giorgio Arduini, in the second of three volumes "Vite di grandi Veronesi" (Lives of great Veronese) - ed. 2005, from which we learn that, having attended classical studies, at university he graduated in medicine and since he was particularly passionate about the disciplines of Gymnastics and Fencing, very popular at that time, he was a tireless promoter of associations and sports; in fact the origins of the association with the "Society of the Old Fencers of Verona" date back to at least 1862.
After the Third Italian Independence War and following the Peace of Vienna on 3rd October 1866, the next 16th October, Verona was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy with a popular plebiscite and Bentegodi decided to enter politics, becoming first municipal councilor and subsequently member of the Provincial Health Council; he was thus able to realize a dream that he had long cherished... assisted by some friends who shared his own sporting and social ideals, including the poet Aleardo Aleardi, for example, on 1st June 1869 was established the municipal sports club "Veronese Society of Gymnastics and Fencing" which saw Marcantonio Bentegodi as a pioneer of sport in Italy and thus he became the protagonist of an initiative, the first and still unique in Italy, as well as, almost certainly, also at international level.
In 1873 Bentegodi had another far-sighted idea... given the frequent fires that occurred in the city, with great difficulty due to the lack of staff and specific training, he set up a provincial school of firefighter volunteers at the same sports club; the purpose was to train volunteer firefighters who were able to provide adequate support to the municipal ones and for this purpose each municipality of the province was invited to form teams of five members to be sent to the school which would provide physical/athletics preparation of them through the sports club.
Unfortunately, on 9(Z)th August of the same year Marcantonio Bentegodi died in Verona at the age of 55.
With a will drawn up less than two years earlier, Bentegodi entrusted the Municipality of Verona with his assets consisting of land, buildings, securities and money for a value today of over € 3,000,000 with the precise provision for the fourth part to be destined “...not to forget the physical education of the Veronese youth...".
From that time several disciplines have entered and exited the sports Association activities, such as football, tambourine, wrestling, cycling, boxing and others, to arrive at the current sections of athletics, fencing, swimming, water polo, diving, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, weightlifting and table tennis, with a palmares rich in 150 medals, 40 of them gold, for a total of 946 athletes registered in 2019 and 58 athletes who in the course of their sporting career dressed in the colors of the Italian national team.
With effect from 1st January 2007 the old "Municipal Institution Marcantonio Bentegodi" took the legal form and name of "Fondazione Bentegodi", with the Municipality of Verona that, as promoter and founder, indirectly maintains control; in 2018, 51 scholarships were awarded to as many worthy young athletes for sports and school results.
The cache is hidden in the place where from 1910 to 1963 the first "vecio" (old) stadium dedicated to Marcantonio Bentegodi was built.
