, in parte smentiti dai primi scavi archeologici, una prima cinta muraria limitava solamente l'area del castello; una seconda cerchia, eretta presumibilmente verso la metà del XIII secolo, scendeva dal castello verso ovest fino all'altezza della riva sinistra della roggia, tagliava in due piazza Contarena e si ricongiungeva alla cerchia dietro la loggia di San Giovanni. La terza cerchia (fine del XIII secolo) fu costruita per racchiudere il borgo San Cristoforo, il borgo di Santa Lucia, le contrade dei Filippini e di Santa Maria, il convento e la chiesa di San Francesco e l'ospedale vecchio. La quarta cerchia includeva i borghi Poscolle, Grazzano e Cascanan. La quinta cinta muraria, conclusa nel 1440, circondò anche l’area ad est della città. Le porte ancora esistenti facenti parte delle mura cittadine sono: la torre di Santa Maria (o Porta Torriani), un tempo chiamata Porta Nuova, porta Manin, porta Aquileia e porta Villalta. Porta Manin, costruita tra il 1273 e il 1299, è per antichità la seconda torre di Udine, rimasta intatta, dopo quella dell'Orologio in piazza Libertà. La torre di Santa Maria, eretta nel 1295, faceva parte della quarta cerchia di mura, mentre porta Aquileia e porta Villalta, innalzata nel 1436, facevano parte della quinta cerchia muraria.

Some of the studies led on the subject, partially contradicted by the first archeological excavations, the first wall were erected to bound just the castle's hill: a second ring probably realized around halfway of the 13th century, came down from the castle westwards to the side of the roggia (canal), dividing piazza Contarena into two parts, up to the rear side of the Loggia and Sant John. The third ring (end of the 13th century) was erected to enclose borgo San Cristoforo, borgo Santa Lucia, the Filippi and Santa Maria town districts, the convent and the church of Saint Francis, the old hospital; the fourth ring enclosed besides the borghi Poscolle, Grazzano and Cascanan.
The fifth walls, finished in 1440, finally incorporated the eastern area of the town. Still visible are today the doors Manin, Aquileia and Villalta, and the tower of Saint Mary (or porta Torriani), fomerely colled Porta Nuova.
Porta Manin, erected between 1273 and 1299 and never altered, is the second oldest Cloch tower of piazza Liberta. The tower of Saint Mary, erected in 1295, were part of the fourth ring of walls, while the doors Aquileia and Villalta, erected in 1436, were part of the fifth ring of walls.
