Franklin Park's newest park will have something for everyone.
The 16.4-acre Old Orchard Park will have fruit trees, a walking trail, an open field for Frisbee or pickup football games, tennis and volleyball courts, a playground and a place to quietly read among flowers and herbs.
"As we develop, we would like to plant a couple more fruit trees to keep with the name of the park," said Jim Watenpool, Franklin Park parks and recreation director.
The borough bought the land on Rochester Road in the mid-1990s from the North Allegheny School District. It is part of an orchard from a former farm and has some fruit trees, Mr. Watenpool said.
The name, adopted by council this month, was suggested by Susan Driver, and chosen from eight possibilities submitted by residents, he added.
"The plans are long range," said Ambrose Rocca, borough manager. "The development of the park will take place over a 10-year period."
Already finished are a one-mile walking trail and a driveway with a 10-car parking lot. The park is designed to be a neighborhood "walk-to" park. Large developments nearby include Franklin Towne and Field Club Estates.
