During the depression, the land in this area was divided into 1 acre blocks so that people could build homes. Because it was cheap and this is a potato growing area, the homes (or were they shanties?)were made out of hessian bags. Hence the term - "Bagtown".
Many Crookwell residents have fond memories from the 1960s of the huge Queen's Birthday Weekend bonfires in Bagtown ... back in the day when bonfires and fireworks were legal.
