The rocks at this site formed quite early in the Jurassic period, about 190 million years ago. The Jurassic period is divided into three epochs: Early, Middle, and Late. Jurassic rock formations are divided into Lower Jurassic, Middle Jurassic, and Upper Jurassic series.

The Jurassic period was a geologic period and system that spanned 56 million years from the end of the Triassic Period 201.3 million years ago to the beginning of the Cretaceous Period 145 million years ago. The Jurassic constitutes the middle period of the Mesozoic Era, also known as the Age of Reptiles. The start of the period was marked by the major Triassic–Jurassic extinction event.

On land, the fauna transitioned to dinosaurs. The first birds also appeared, along with the earliest lizards. Crocodilians transitioned from land to an aquatic mode of life. The oceans were inhabited by marine reptiles.

Nova Scotia’s brief Jurassic period was before much of this happened and is nicknamed the dawn of the dinosaur. At this site, you will find rocks from the early Jurassic period, which was before many of the previously mentioned life formed. There were no footsteps when these rocks formed.

The top thick layers of this cliff were deposited by braided streams.

Braided stream flow

A Braided stream is a stream consisting of multiple small, shallow channels that divide and recombine numerous times forming a pattern resembling the strands of a braid. Braided streams form where the sediment load is so heavy that some of the sediments are deposited as shifting islands or bars between the channels.

Braided stream sample

Below the area of this cliff that formed through braided streams, you will find a specific area of layering of sandstone and mudstone. This is a lense-shaped area of lake or pond deposits near the base of the cliff. This lense-shaped area is the eye-catching feature. It is striped with contrasting layers deposited in an area of standing water that lowered and was refilled from time to time.
