Auer von Welsbach tramite un'analisi spettroscopica individuò il neodimio nel didimio insieme al praseodimio, tuttavia l'elemento non fu isolato in forma pura fino al 1925. Il nome deriva dalle parole greche neos, nuovo, e didimos, gemello.
