L'ossigeno venne scoperto indipendentemente da Carl Wilhelm Scheele a Uppsala nel 1773 e da Joseph Priestley nel Wiltshire nel 1774, ma Priestley è spesso accreditato per esserne il primo in quanto i suoi studi furono pubblicati antecedentemente a quelli di Scheele. Il nome "ossigeno" venne coniato nel 1777 da Antoine Lavoisier, i cui esperimenti con esso contribuirono a screditare la teoria del flogisto, allora popolare, riguardo alla combustione e alla corrosione. Il nome deriva dal greco ὀξύς, oxýs, «acido» (letteralmente: «appuntito») e la radice γεν-, ghen-, che significa «generare».
