Il selenio è [...] un non metallo chimicamente affine allo zolfo ed al tellurio. L'elemento è tossico ad alte dosi ma nel 1957 Schwarz e Foltz stabilirono che esso è un elemento essenziale nella dieta, utile nella prevenzione di alcune malattie. Esiste in diverse forme allotropiche, di cui una stabile dall'aspetto grigio e simile ad un metallo; in questa forma il selenio possiede una resistenza elettrica inferiore quando è esposto alla luce, pertanto trova impiego nella realizzazione delle fotocellule. In natura si trova in minerali costituiti da solfuri come, ad esempio, la pirite.
Il selenio esiste in svariate forme allotropiche. Come polvere è selenio amorfo, rosso, mentre la forma vetrosa è nera. La forma cristallina esagonale è di colore grigio metallico, mentre il cristallo monoclino ha un colore rosso saturo.
Possiede anche proprietà fotovoltaiche, converte cioè la luce in elettricità, e mostra un effetto fotoconduttivo, cioè la conduttanza elettrica aumenta se il selenio viene esposto alla luce. Al di sotto del suo punto di fusione, il selenio è un semiconduttore di tipo p. [...]
