Geocache Description:

An educational walk through history.

This adventure is a little different from the usual "Cache and Dash" routine. What you are looking for is a hole in the wall on "The Strand", in historic New Castle Delaware. Park where you can, and follow the GPS. To claim this cache, e-mail the answer to the question- What is it?
Answer is on a Historic marker plaque.

While in town, look into a few of the other historically significant sites of the Colonial peroid. The George Read house and gardens lies in the middle of The Strand. On Second to Forth Street you can find the Immanuel Church and Cemetery (1689), the Dutch House museum (circa 1680), and the Amstel House museum (1730).

Visit the New Castle Courthouse and get a brochure of the sites. One common misconception about the Courthouse is that the Delaware- Pennsylvania "12 mile arc" was surveved from the steeple of the courthouse. The courthouse wasn't even built when the survey was first done! The true survey point was Broad Dike 1/2 mile from todays courthouse. Due to errors inherent with survey tecniques the 12 mile arc turned into 13 miles. Delaware and Pennsylvania have disputed every inch of this boundry until 1921 when the arc was finally resurveyed within acceptable standards to satisfy the two states.

Stop for lunch or dinner at one of the fine restraunts on Delaware Street or the Green.
