Geocache Description:

Taupo Bay is one of Northland's best beaches. The beach is extremely wide and slopes gradually into the sea and curves in a gentle arc for a length of almost one and a half kilometres.

This popular holiday, fishing & surfing spot is located in between Whangaroa Harbour and Doubtless Bay on the Far Norths east coast. The beach is 11 km's from the SH16 turn off.

The Sand Spit located at the eastern end of the beach is an Endangered Bird Nesting Site. The ground nesting shorebirds (Variable Oystercatcher and New Zealand Dotteral) using this beach are threatened with EXTINCTION. Please help by NOT passing through the FENCED OFF AREA, and by remaining below the high tide mark.

As you walk along to the cache keep an eye out for some of the local wildlife. When setting up this hide we spotted Variable Oystercatcher's, NZ  Dotteral's, Pied Stilts, Black Backed Gulls and Red Billed Gulls. We would love to see your photos.

You are looking for a small container with enough room for travel bugs and swapables. You will need to navigate your way over rocks and a little climbing is required at the end. Hopefully you are able to reach. Have adjusted the terrain rating by .5 to compensate. Please BYOP.

Note:

1# No dogs are permitted at this end of the beach.

2# There is a Rahui (permanent preservation order) in place against the gathering of Mussel & Paua in this area.
