Elm Park was a rest area where motorists could stop, rest, and have a picnic along the highway. The state had to remove the Elm tree in 1961 when it died of Dutch Elm disease. These days, small rest areas like these are no longer needed with modern cars, but when these rest areas would have been used, horses and buggies were still very common.
