The North-East Swale - SCAR2019 Traditional Cache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

Northern Gardener: After receiving a note with a photo from Tyrelish, I visited GZ and picked up some trash but unfortunately the original cache is gone. If you found an uncamouflaged film canister, that wasn't it. I will need to come up with a different kind of hide now. Back soon ...

Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at one of several trail entrances around the North-East Swale, an ecologically sensitive area within the City of Saskatoon. "No Dogs" means no dogs in the Swale, but Rover can help you look for the cache as long as he/she is under your control.

As development continues around the Swale, this area continues to change. At present, maps still designate this area between Agra Road and Fedoruk Road as part of the Swale. The Swale is home to some of the last Plains Rough Fescue remaining in the world, and is habitat for over 200 plant species and over 100 bird species including the critically endangered burrowing owl. The City of Saskatoon's own website provides more background on this area and links to other resources. In one section, "How You Can Help" the City lists do's and don'ts when visiting this area, and I have included them here:

Conserving the Swale cannot be done without our community. When in the Swale, please:

  • Take photographs of this beautiful area;
  • Enjoy watching for interesting wildlife;
  • Bike on developed pathways or walk around the area;
  • Consider planting native species on your property and use dark sky lighting if you live in the area; and

Please don’t:

  • Dump waste or garbage, and remove litter when possible;
  • Bring your dogs. (No dogs in the Ecological Core);
  • Use motorized vehicles; and
  • Pick plants.

If you are new to this area and/or new to geocaching, you may be interested in visiting GC6KZ5X Ancient River Channel, an Earth Cache that explores the geological history of the North East Swale.

Congratulations to Queenbee53 and Topdog52 for a shared FTF!

This cache was originally placed for SCAR2019, Saskatoon's annual "Cache and Release" event, held in late May each year. Visit Saskatoon & Area Geocachers Association's web page to learn more about this and other local events. Cache on!
