This cache replaces the original Church Micro by JPitt5, which was archived before I adopted The Return series in April 2019. Some of the information below is retained from the original cache.
This cache is also “THE RETURN 15” in the series, created so that cachers completing the 'Lipchis Canal Wander' series nearby have a caching route back to Chichester and eventually to where they started.
The Church - St Peter and St Mary, Fishbourne
This has been a location for worship for over 750 years. The site of the church overlooks Fishbourne Creek, which was formed as part of a busy harbour since Roman times, and probably earlier. It is a very pretty area.
The church stands south of the Chichester bypass, surrounded by trees and meadows, close to Fishbourne Place, a house of 1687.
The church consists of a restored C13th chancel with a Nave that was rebuilt in the C19th with aisles. The church building itself has been subject to changes and additions throughout its past, but medieval graffiti can still be seen on the north east quoin, which may be pilgrims' marks.
The Cache
Please note that the coordinates published here are not where you will find the cache, but they do take you close to the entrance to the churchyard. The cache itself is only a short walk away. It is not a micro (!) and contains a log book, pencil and some swaps initially. There is room for trackables. To find it, please find the following information:
The coordinates will take you to two gates in the corner of the church car park.
A = Look at the gate closest to the finger post (it has a clear 'X' shape in its construction). How many horizontal rungs does it have?
B = Travel to the West side of the church. How many windows are there above the door?
C = Near the white metal cross with shields, how many birthdays did poor little Beryl Patricia have?
D = Her mother lived to nearly 100. 19DD – 20DD– add all the Ds together.
E= On the South side of the churchyard, find an old cross on its own, for Hilda Fairfax Moresby. How many letters in the month in which she was born?
The cache can then be found at these coordinates:
N AC AC.CCC
W CCC DE.AEB
All of the numbers should add up to 38. You should find the cache within 5m of the co-ordinates - any problems please note in your log.
After logging your find and replacing the cache carefully, you can continue walking to find the last in the series - 'The Return 16' (GC5D2YA)
- Follow the path until you reach the A259 Fishbourne Road West, turn right and cross carefully to proceed to the underpass.

Upon completing the series (in order) you may wish to find the following to take you back to the Chichester Ship Canal either to return or to complete the 'Lipchis Canal Wander' series:
'Big Green Ugly Thing' (GC4WF3F)
After this cache, please follow the signs to Chichester Railway Station.
