The symbol commonly recognized as the “peace sign” began as the logo for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). According to the CND, it was designed in 1958 by an Englishman named Gerald Holtom. Although perhaps not the inspiration for Holtom, the symbol can be seen as the semaphore flag representations for N and D, superimposed on each other; the N standing for “Nuclear” and the D for “Disarmament.” This symbol has been used by various organizations around the world since that time.
