Deriving from the old english word "cace-" and the medieval Latin word "pullus" (a chick), the job title catchpole was born. According to Wikipedia, it is derived from the image that people who owed taxes were as difficult to catch as farmyard hens. Later, the duties of the 'catchpole' were those of a legal official, working for the bailiff, and he was mainly responsible for collecting debts. Presumably, no catchpole ever visited Staatsburgh Mansion!
