First a little information...
Wyandotte Street East Arch Bridge,
Structural engineer : Dillon Group
Construction manager : Front Construction & Engineering
Walters Inc. provided all fabrication and installation services for the project
Located in the City of Windsor, Ontario, this bridge is based on a unique triple arch design. In order to minimize the required field assembly, they took a modular approach to creating the bridge; fabricating enormous modules in their plant and then shipping them in convoys to the site. An intense welding and Quality Assurance program helped to make the project a success.
Their Engineering group worked closely with the structural consultant to eliminate cuts and reconfigure some of the critical platework details to provide a better overall aesthetic and to reduce long-term inspection and maintenance costs.
The major challenge on this project was shipping to avoid all field welding, the blasting and the painting over the sensitive river and wetland environment. At the time, these were the widest loads ever shipped along the Highway 403/401 corridor involving a parade of trucks, escort vehicles, police escorts, spare tractors, ramp traffic management vehicles, etc. to convoy the arches to site.
The structure links Wyandotte St. E. from Riverdale Ave. to Banwell Avenue. Spanning 30 metres, the bridge provides two motor vehicle lanes, two sidewalks and two bicycle paths. The number of vehicle lanes can be expanded to four lanes if needed.
It cost $2 million to build and another $2.5 million plus for roadwork and "officially" opened Dec 11, 2006.
Now that I have covered that, I was out for a walk with my wife and we were doing some maintenance on some of our other caches. We stopped up on the bridge for her to look around and snap a few pictures, thats when I thought there should be a cache here as well. So, since we had some replacement caches on us I placed a new one here. Good Hunting and Happy Caching.
