Geocache Description:

Ali's last trip down his namesake street

Before he was a Kentucky state lawmaker, E. Porter Hatcher, Jr. was a friend and neighbor of a young Muhammad Ali.  They grew up within one block of each other on Grand Avenue in West Louisville, and both attended Central High School.  In 1978, while serving as the city's 12th district alderman, Hatcher sponsored the renaming of Walnut Street and Michigan Drive to be Muhammad Ali Boulevard to honor the boxing great and Louisville native.  The resolution did not pass easily, as many begrudged Ali for not submitting to the military draft and fighting in Vietnam.  However, the resolution did pass six to five.  Muhammad Ali Boulevard spans 5 miles running west from E. Chestnut Street, through downtown Louisville, and ending at Shawnee Park.
