Operated by the Indiana Audobon Society, the sanctuary was a gift from Alice Green Gray in 1943 as a living memorial to her daughter, Mary, who had preceeded her in death. The initial gift was 264 acres but with an additional gift by Congressman Finly H. Gray and others, the property now totals over 700 acres.
While you are here, stop and enjoy nature for a while. This is one of the best birding spots in this area of the state. If you happen by on a Saturday morning, there will frequently be biologists catching and banding birds in an effort to research more about the different species of birds that live or migrate through here.
The property is open from dawn to dusk.
The property manager wants to emphasize the importance of staying on the trails here.
There is absolutely no reason why anyone should leave a trail to find this cache. Leaving the trail helps the spread of invasive species, which they are trying extremely hard to get rid of at Mary Gray.
