As you look east from the main parking, you'll see a rise of elevation. There's some geology behind all of that.
From parking, look west. There's the Hudson River, a tidal estuary, carved out by the retreat of the Lake Albany glaciation approximately 12,000 years ago. However, looking down at the estuary is only half of the story. That glacier was approximately one mile deep. Look east. There's more elevation that was cut out by this melt-off. And when you get atop of it, you can explore up close some of the rock formations that were exposed by this process.
