Înfiinţarea
După unirea Transilvaniei cu România, Consiliul Dirigent, organul conducator, executiv, al Transilvaniei, a luat hotârârea de a înfiinţa licee româneşti în toate oraşele transilvănene. Printre acestea se găsea şi cel din Şimleu.
Actualul Colegiul Național Simion Bărnuțiu din Șimleu Silvaniei a fost primul liceu romanesc din județul Sălaj. Numele liceului a fost atribuit în memoria revoluționarului pașoptist Simion Bărnuțiu, care în anul 1820 a absolvit cursurile şcolii gimnaziale la Șimleu Silvaniei.
Liceul a fost deschis pe 1 octombrie 1919 cu cinci clase şi 104 elevi, în clădirea actualului Liceu Tehnologic „Ioan Ossian”. Primul director a fost Ioan Ossian. Acesta a cutreierat toate localităţile Ţării Silvaniei pentru a-i îndupleca pe români să-şi dea copiii la liceu. Ioan Ossian - martir al dictaturii comuniste din Romania, a fost profesor de limba latină şi istorie precum şi director al Liceului "Simion Bărnutiu" timp de 21 de ani şi s-a remarcat ca unul dintre cei mai cunoscuţi oameni de şcoală ai Sălajului. Un moment deosebit în viata lui Ioan Ossian şi a liceului l-a constituit dezvelirea bustului marelui înaintaş si patron spiritual al liceului, Simion Bărnuţiu. Bustul lui Simion Bărnuţiu a fost amplasat în faţa liceului care îi purta numele şi a fost dezvelit la data de 7 septembrie 1930.
Această zi a fost o adevarată sărbătoare naţională a românismului de pretutindeni. A fost prezent întreg Salajul, Ardealul a fost reprezentat prin conducătorii săi de seama, iar provinciile surori prin delegaţi.
Acest bust al lui Simion Bărnuţiu din curtea liceului a fost declarat monument istoric de către Ministerul Culturii.
Istoricul liceului
În anul 1948, odată cu noua reformă a învăţământului, liceul este desfiinţat deoarece nu mai corespundea ,,avântului revoluţionar’’ din zorii perioadei comuniste. În locul său a fost înfiinţată o şcoală profesională care, în timp a devenit Liceul Tehnologic ,,Ioan Ossian’’ de astăzi.
A fost reînfiinţat în anul 1956 sub denumirea de ,,Liceu de Cultură Generală’’, într-o altă clădire (cea a Şcolii Maghiare de azi).
În anul 1965 este dat în folosinţă actualul local al şcolii.
În anul 1977 Liceul Teoretic a fost unit cu Liceul Economic sub titlul de Liceul de filologie-istorie.
În anul 1990, imediat după evenimentele din decembrie 1989, titulatura şcolii a devenit Liceul Teoretic „Simion Bărnuţiu”. În 2004 a devenit Colegiu Naţional.
Istoricul liceului se împleteşte strâns cu istoricul zonei si a comunităţii pe care a deservit-o. Acest liceu reprezentativ al Ţării Silvaniei a propulsat mii de tineri spre învăţământul academic, de aceea nenumărate generaţii de intelectuali se mândresc cu faptul că au păşit pragul acestei scoli.
Rezultate de exceptie s-au obtinut şi pe plan internaţional – de exemplu, foşti elevi ai liceului au obţinut Medalia de Aur la olimpiada internationala de chimie, in 2004 şi Medalia de Argint la olimpiada internationala de matematica din 2008.

Establishment
After the union of Transylvania with Romania, Consiliul Dirigent - the governing body, executive, of Transylvania, decided to set up Romanian high schools in all Transylvanian cities. Among them was the one from Şimleu.
The present Simion Bărnuţiu National College from Şimleu Silvaniei was the first Romanian high school in Sălaj County. The name of the high school was given for the memory of the revolutionary Simion Bărnuţiu, who graduated the Gymnasium of Şimleu Silvaniei in 1820.
The high school opened on October 1, 1919 with five classes and 104 students, in the building of the current Ioan Ossian Technology High School. The first director was Ioan Ossian. He traveled to all the villages of the Land of Silvania to persuade the Romanians to give their children to high school. Simion Bărnuţiu's bust from the high school yard
A special moment in the life of Ioan Ossian and the high school's was the unveiling of the bust of the great forerunner and spiritual patron of the high school, Simion Bărnuţiu. The bust was placed in front of the high school that bears his name and was unveiled on September 7, 1930.
This day was a true national celebration of Romanianism everywhere. The whole Salaj county was present, Transylvania was represented by its distinguished leaders, and the sister provinces by delegates.
This bust of Simion Barnutiu in the high school courtyard was declared a historical monument by the Ministry of Culture.
History
In 1948, with the new reform of education, the high school was closed because it no longer corresponded to the "revolutionary momentum" from the dawn of the communist period. Instead, a vocational school was set up which, in time, became the "Ioan Ossian" Technology High School of today.
It was re-established in 1956 under the name of "High School of General Knowledge", in another building (that of the Hungarian School of Today).
In 1965 it moved to the current location.
In 1977 the Theoretical High School was united with the Economic High School under the title of the School of Philology and History.
In 1990, immediately after the Romanian Revolution of 1989, the school title became "Simion Bărnuţiu" Theoretical High School. In 2004 it became a National College.
The history of the high school is closely intertwined with the history of the area and the community it served. This representative high school of Silvania has propelled thousands of young people to academic education, so innumerable generations of intellectuals are proud to have stepped into this school.
Outstanding results have also been achieved internationally - for example, high school students have won the Golden Medal at the International Chemistry Olympics in 2004 and the Silver Medal at the 2008 International Mathematical Olympics.
