This series of caches has been placed to take you around the park to some of my favourite spots. This one is a new platform lookout over fields which become flooded. If you're lucky you'll see visiting wading birds as well as the ducks and geese. At other times it is pasture with farm animals grazing. Cache placed with kind permission of Nene Park Trust.
1968 Peterborough was designated a new town and as part of the planning a new park was created. Ferry Meadows is at the heart of Nene Park, which stretches west along the valley of the river Nene from the city centre to Wansford. Ferry Meadows has 500 acres of lakes, woodland, grassland and meadows. Most of the land was originally agricultural and also on the flood plain of the river.
As part of the construction of the roads in and around Peterborough, more than 5,000,000 tonnes of gravel was extracted to form what are now the lakes at Ferry Meadows.
The park is a lovely area for cycling, walking and picnics. It has a range of leisure activities from sailing and pedallos on the lake, to childrens play areas and a mini railway. During the summer there are a number of events hosted at the park and a popular park run at the weekend all year round. There's a visitor centre, toilets and two cafes. Car parking in the park is plentiful (charges apply); there's limited free parking at the Ferry Bridge end of the park. The path to the cache is wheelchair friendly but help may be needed with retrieval. Stealth is required when the park is busy.
