Lights Out Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

bridgebum: Well, the batteries WERE dead. But in taking the cache apart, I noticed a couple of other problems. Some of the wooden "structure" has cracked and has mold on it. And there are electronic issues that need addressing, particularly with the keypad. All in all, it would take more effort to fix than I am currently willing to devote to it. So we are reluctantly going to "pull the plug".
Thanks to everyone that gave it a "favorite"!

How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

This large ammo can is the third of our "smart" gadget caches. It's very easy to find - it's right in front of our house! We've even got a nice bench for you to sit on while you're working. But you'll have to do some thinking before you can sign the log.

This geocache is based on a handheld game called Lights Out, which was introduced in 1995 by Tiger Electronics. When you open the ammo can, you'll see a 4 by 4 array of buttons, with some of them lit. Your objective is to turn off all the lights by pressing the appropriate buttons. Once that's done, you'll get access to the log book.

Pressing a button changes the state of that button's light. So if the light was off, it's now on. If it was on, it's now off. However, pressing a button also changes the state of buttons immediately above, below, left, and right, if they exist.

This example should help to clarify things.

Have no fear - if you run into difficulties, you will be given the opportunity to get some help.

Feel free to park in our driveway (6948). We will likely know if you're working on this cache, so if we're home and not busy with something, we might come out and say hi.

But no night caching please - we wouldn't want our pack of pit bulls to mistake you for a burglar! OK, we technically don't have any pit bulls, but our goldfish has quite a temper! 😉

This cache was inspired by one hidden by hyliston, a very creative geocacher from Massachusetts. Thanks, Eric, for both the idea and for allowing me to use the helpful example!
